November is Healthy Skin Month!

November is Healthy Skin Month!

Your skin is your largest organ.  We usually think about skin from a perspective of vanity (too wrinkly, too much hair, etc) but it is actually a very important organ.  Our skin health reveals a lot about our overall health too!  November is the month to think about how to protect your skin and avoid skin cancers.

Top 5 ways to take great care of your skin:

  1. Hydrate!  Hydrated skin is healthy skin. Hydrating with 6-8 glasses of water daily will help keep your skin moist from the inside out.  Use an appropriate moisturizer for your skin type daily to help keep skin hydrated from the outside.
  2. Cleanse daily. We should all cleanse our face and neck with a gentle cleanser once a day to remove make-up, dirt, and germs from our skin.  Know your skin type and what cleansers are best suited for you and be regimented about your daily cleansing routine.
  3. Don’t forget your sunscreen.  Every day, even in winter, you should apply SPF 30 sun screen to your exposed skin.  Many skin cancers are preventable with sun protection.
  4. Check for changes.  Inspect your skin for new spots.  The most dangerous moles are dark in color, increasing in size, and have irregular borders.   If you have changing moles, rashes, or other skin concerns you should see your skin care provider for advice.
  5. Eat your fruits and berries.  Foods high in vitamin C like berries, melons, oranges and kiwis help keep our skin healthy.  Vitamin C is critical in skin healing and help build collagen.
