Introduction to Birth Control
It can be overwhelming trying to choose the right birth control method for your needs. WCJC will walk you through everything you need to know.
A large majority of men and women use birth control at some point in their life. For women in Kansas City, it is important to find a GYN near you that respects your wishes, listens to your concerns, and understands the need for birth control beyond pregnancy prevention. We use birth control to control our cycles, prevent PMS or other period symptoms, prevent sexually transmitted infections, even control acne.
WCJC is passionate about providing patient-centered care to each and every woman in our office seeking birth control. From your first visit, we will provide you with the most up-to-date medical information, review your needs, and empower you to make the best decision for your body.

How it Works
WCJC makes IUD placement easy and comfortable.
After an initial exam, our providers will help you determine the best birth control method for your needs. If you decide on an IUD (intrauterine device) or the Nexplanon (arm implant), we will help facilitate insurance pre-approval and schedule a separate appointment for your IUD or Nexplanon placement. Depending on the brand of IUD you choose, and whether or not you are already using a contraceptive, it may be ideal to insert it during the first 7 days of your period.
If a patient is sexually active, we recommend avoiding unprotected intercourse for 2 weeks prior to placement. We also recommend taking over the counter ibuprofen, naproxen or acetaminophen (Tylenol) with food prior to your arrival for IUD placement to decrease pain that may be experienced with insertion. For Nexplanon patients, we will apply a local anesthetic to the treatment area before placing the device.

Benefits
Being proactive about your health as a woman can make a huge difference in your overall quality of life.
Gynecologists have an in-depth understanding of how various birth control methods can work for different patients. While some patients’ only goal is to prevent pregnancy, many others seek birth control for benefits like mitigating hormone symptoms, combatting heavy periods & irregular cycles, or even something as simple as improving acne/skin quality. No matter your objective, your WCJC provider will ensure you understand all of your options to work toward accomplishing them.
