Introduction to Miscarriage Treatment

If you have experienced a miscarriage, Women’s Clinic of Johnson County can help.

About 50% of miscarriages do not expel naturally. When tissue remains in the uterus, it can cause pain, heavy bleeding, and other symptoms. Medication, which will be prescribed and then taken at home, can induce your uterus to contract and expel the tissue on its own. Another option is Dilation & Curettage, or D&C, which is performed in the operating room allows your provider to effectively target and remove the remaining tissue.

How it Works

Learn more about what to expect if you choose dilation and curettage to manage your miscarriage.

While under anesthesia, we will dilate the cervix. Dilation before curettage is an important step in allowing us to effectively reach the target area. Once the cervix is open, we are able to reach and remove the tissue in question.

Therapeutic D&C allows your doctor to remove tissue from inside the uterus. The D&C procedure targets and removes specific concerning tissue within the uterus, such as an incomplete miscarriage or abortion which the body did not naturally expel.

Medically Induced Miscarriages

You will treat your miscarriage with a medication called misoprostol. You can use this by dissolving it in your mouth (holding in your cheek for 30 minutes, then swallowing the remainder), or inserting it vaginally. Please follow the instructions given by your provider.

Common side effects include upset stomach, flushing, hot flashes, cramping, and diarrhea.
